Want to know what you can do to manage your energy more effectively?
First step: Discover the different energy sources
Energy is a special term. We all know what it is. We know when we have it and when we don’t. And yet, it is not so easy to define or comprehend. Some say: “energy is about feeling good about yourself, wanting to do something”. Others will talk about “feeling enthusiastic, or engaged”. Or even “a feeling of vitality, a sense of drive”. Whatever you call it, energy clearly has different connotations and components, and derives from different sources.
BODY
The physical aspect is key when it comes to energy. This has to do with how well you take care of your body. How do you eat? How about the quality of your sleep? Do you take regular breaks? Are you able to relax? And how about movement and exercise? What do you do to keep your body in condition? Are you paying attention to the signals your body is sending?
MIND
Your mental fitness also defines your energy level. What do you give your attention to? What do you focus on and how focused are you? Do you know how to fight distraction? Do you give your mind time to relax and digest? What are your goals? Our thinking also influences our feelings. What do you do when faced with obstacles or failures? Do you undermine yourself even more? Or do you treat yourself gently, allowing yourself to bounce back and recover?
HEART
Our heart or emotional energy is the energy we derive from our emotions. Emotions are a strong driving force. Positive emotions generate energy, negative emotions consume energy. Do you know that you can regulate your emotions? How do you do that? How do you generate positive emotions? How about dealing with anger, anxiety and grief? And do you take time for activities you really enjoy?
SOUL
We feel energized when we do things that are important to us, that have meaning and that are linked to our values and talents. Do you know what your values and talents are? What is your personal mission? Do you have the feeling you are making a real contribution? Or not? The more you do things that mirror your values, talents and personal calling, the more energy you will have.
CONNECTION
Humans need to connect with other humans. Our feeling of connection gives us energy. This is the social dimension of energy. How do you relate to others? Who gives you energy, who drains it? And how do you handle the latter? How do you approach others? With an open mind and trusting heart? Or not quite so open and trusting? How do you manage your social energy?

The 3 practical tips below can give you a head start:
ENERGY SCAN
Take the time every day, at least once for about 10 minutes, to evaluate your energy level during the day. Give yourself a score from 1 to 10, with 0 meaning no energy and 10 meaning fully energized. Also check what gave you energy and what drained it during the day. Do this in relation to the 5 energy sources.
Keep this up for about 14 days and you will learn a great deal about your specific energy make-up and how you can manage your energy more effectively. Record the actions you can take to boost your energy on a daily basis.
BREATHING BREAK
Experiencing some difficult emotions? A meeting full of frustration? An email that has your blood boiling? A moment of stress? How can you still respond in a calm manner and stay on top of your emotions? The answer is very simple. Take a deep breath and take a breathing break: a moment to breathe in and out in a mindful way, taking a few seconds longer than strictly necessary for each breath. You do not necessarily need to withdraw to a special location. You can do this anywhere. When our emotions run high, our breath accelerates and a part of our brain shuts down. A few deep breath inhales and exhales allow us to regulate our emotional energy, reclaim our serenity and re-activate the rational part of our brain. Just give it a try! This is a very easy practice and highly effective.
PLEASURE SHOT
Make sure you get your daily pleasure shot. A pleasure shot is an activity you really enjoy, something that makes you happy. A pleasure shot should take at least 10 minutes a day, but, of course, more is definitely OKAY. This is not about a fun activity that you have to do, but a conscious gift to yourself either at work or in your own time.
